The Personal Survival Kit:
As the title implies, I wanted something that I could have on me at all times, as an adjunct to whatever other kit I might be carrying. While I want to keep a large kit handy at all times, it may not be possible to lug it around with me all day, every day. Something smaller was needed for that. Also, I wanted a kit that would pass a visual inspection, and not draw attention to itself. This kit is not all-encompassing, nor could it be or should it be. Its small size, while limiting in some areas, provides the basics to sustain life if it's all you have.
That's what this kit is all about, providing the most important things in a survival situation:
In a seemingly never-ending quest for the ultimate kit, the one kit that is as small as I can get it yet still maintain functionality, this is the latest endeavor. Like all of us I have a desire to have the basics on me at all times, but recognize that our lifestyles and simple physics impose certain limitations upon us. As for the lifestyle limitations, we just have to recognize that overburdening ourselves for an eventuality that may never come to pass is counterproductive and can even lead to a kit that, while perfect, isn’t carried due to bulk. The physics angle is self-evident, I hope; we can only carry so much in our pockets before our pants are in danger of dropping down…
The Common Misconception:
All too often do we listen to media, the internet and in the matter of survival to couch survivalists or people on you tube. If somebody has 1000 commends on a forum, chance are he or she isn’t out in the woods….
You don’t need to believe me either, however I urge you to try things for yourself and test them and then with your “new “knowledge you WILL be prepared!
Survival kits (store bought or homemade) in a altoid can or water bottle seem to be the latest fad and it is advertised that with this in your pocket you will survive….
Here on which is commercially for sale and their advertisement:
Here we have a genuine air-tight, waterproof, crushproof sardine can packed full of 25 survival items. Go fish with the hook and line, find your way home with the compass, boil water in the can for your tea and sugar, use the first aid supplies to survive the wilderness. Since being well prepared is half the challenge, you'll have a good head start with this kit. Put one in your car, boat, motorcycle, fishing vest, backpack, bike, emergency kit, etc.
The kit includes one of each of the following items: non-aspirin pain reliever, adhesive bandage, alcohol prep pad, antibiotic ointment, book of matches, compass, chewing gum, sugar, salt, energy nugget, duct tape, fire starter cube, first aid instructions, fish hook & line, note paper, pencil, razor blade, safety pin, reflective signal surface, tea bag, waterproof bag, whistle, and wire clip.
Holds emergency medical supplies, nourishment, navigation aids and more. Compact size that's easy to carry
Waterproof, floats in water
Dimensions: 4.25" x 3" x .9"

My personal impression is that the can is too small to cook in, the matches are of low quality and after opening the tin they got damp and didn’t light, the tread scares the fish and the only hook doesn’t cut it for emergency fishing. However, you can make yourself some tee or soup (if you have a better /larger can at hand and didn’t get your matches damp – as I did….). Well, if nothing works for you in your emergency, sit down have a bonbon or a gum. Then take the pencil, write your last will, disinfect your wrists and slash them with the blade. I forgot, take the painkiller first…. the end is near….
Seriously, this stuff is almost useless.
I am not a fan of the altoid sized survival kit ( as an emergency kit), as most of the time it has more than you really need and most people leave it behind sooner or later ( it doesn’t help you if you left it in camp!)
I carry a little pouch on my belt with the following items vacuum sealed:
2 scalpel blades
9 assorted fishing hooks on leaders
ferro rod
spool of 20m braided 20lb fishing line
2 steel fishing leaders (snares)
2 needles
10m thread
With this and a knife I am quite comfortable if an emergency arrives. I never use anything out of this pouch!
